Board games! Roleplaying games! Viking LARPS! Stage shows that are a hybrid of roleplaying, comedy, and improv games!

We REALLY like games at CfGHQ so we’re heading to the UK Games Expo to game for three whole days (plus the industry preview because we’re fancy like that).

Here’s what’s on our schedule so far – all subject to change but you have to start with a plan.

HERO MASTER – An Epic Game of Epic Fails

Being big old nerds who love us some Dungeons that may or may not have Dragons in them, Hero Master immediately appealed.

In Hero Master: An Epic Game of Epic Fails you don’t play the bold hero. You’re the other guys… the accident-prone, the lazy and the borderline useless. But… You’ve got a point to prove! So get your axe, and try to swing it in the right direction!

We’ll be meeting Jamie from The Noble Artist to get a demo of this D&D inspired game of ineptitude and maybe grabbing him for an episode of the podcast too.

Hero Master hits Kickstarter in September 2018 and if it plays half as well as the art looks, it could be a hit.

Boots trudge on frozen soil. The sun rises over the peaks of distant hills, and among the hissing of hydraulic pistons, the rattle of artillery can be heard in the distance. Do you charge ahead? Or take cover beneath the nearby trees?

Farsight was Braincrack Games’ biggest launch of last year, raising over $53k in its Kickstarter campaign. This strategy miniatures game has won plenty of plaudits and we’ll be meeting the Braincrack team and the game’s designer Jamie Jolly to see if it lives up to the hype.

Also from Braincrack Games, this one’s a little different…

Enter, stage left, The Gig – a dice drafting jazz improv game from the minds of Robb Smigielski and Jamie Gray.

Players must work together – whilst vying for the spotlight themselves – to ensure one of several songs is completed, without clashing for leadership, whilst independently crafting their own solos in a roll-and-write mini-puzzle!

Will Robin become the jazz dalek he’s dreamed of ever since the Mighty Boosh aired?

Based on the MoureQuest Novel by Garry McElherron, this is an adventure game filled with myth & folklore from the heart of the Emerald Isle.

MourneQuest is a cooperative board game for 1 to 4 players with constant threat pushing the players forward.

Players assume the roles of the book’s heroes and must journey in the Mourne Mountains to work together to defeat the evil Shimnavore before it is too late. On their quest they’ll encounter many enemies, including infuriating Bogbeans and terrifying Nightmares like the Banshee, the Changeling and the Dullahan. To triumph, heroes must gather charms, equipment and magical relics, to increase their powers and use their skills and combat abilities effectively.

MourneQuest is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter.

Those are the demos we have lined up (the team probably have more!).

But what else? UK Games Expo isn’t JUST board games, oh no.

Our three CfGers will be tackling roleplaying game Tales From The Loop. This awesome tabletop roleplaying game is set in the surrounds of a particle accelerator where strange things are occurring. 80s teenage adventures await, very much in a Stranger Tings vein.

Watching the swarm of butterflies flowing between the Buddleia at the ‘meadow’ where you play is peaceful in the sunshine and the silence is welcome after all the arguments at home. But why is it so quiet, where is the birdsong, and what are all these little bones scattered about in the grass?

We don’t yet know what our GM Darran Sims has in store for us.

How about a LARP?

Ten years ago, Daxo murdered his beloved older brother, Baldr. Exiled by his father for his crime, he’s spent a long decade wandering. But now he’s heard that his dear grandfather has died, and he’s returned home to claim his inheritance.

Inheritance tells the tale of two families coming to terms with forgiveness, debt, religion, law and death. In three acts, the game presents a powerful drama unique to the players and their decisions.
The LARP will be played outdoors in the camp of the Viking group performing at UKGE and run by games master Guy MacDonnell.

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL! Oh no we’re doing some shows and seminars too:

We’ll be joining the legendary author of the massively successful Fighting Fantasy Books for a live reading of Deathtrap Dungeon.

Ian will be doing his best to lure his intrepid adventurer, John Robertson – star of the Dark Room – to a horrible death helped by us – the audience.

Will John emerge intact or will he be just another victim of the Deathtrap Dungeon?

Speaking of The Dark Room…

Featuring special guest Ian Livingstone, the cultiest of the cult shows, THE DARK ROOM returns to UK Games Expo for the fourth straight year.

Updated! Expanded! Unhinged! Ready your Flamboyant Potatoes, gather your Darrens and get ready to adventure until YA DIE, YA DIE, YA DIE!

The Dark Room is a live-action videogame and a hilarious parody of text adventures from the 80s! It’s the interactive adventure of your nightmares (when Robin saw it in London someone in the audience won an actual heart in a box).

A statistically insignificant amount taller than Tom Cruise, Tom Crosbie is the nerdiest comedian to appear at UK Games Expo and will have a Rubik’s Cube race with anyone that claims otherwise.

Join him for 3,333 seconds of fun… if you dare. To be honest, you should probably come even if you don’t dare. It’s really not that dangerous.

An hour of memory games, mathematics and an amazing skill with Rubik’s Cubes. WHHICH FRANKLY MAKES ME FROTHY!

I’ve been chatting with Jackson Pope on twitter for ages.

And now Jackson Pope will show us his tips & tricks for making a card game by hand.

Over the course of an hour, Jackson will hand-craft a copy of Zombology in front of a live audience. During the demonstration he will talk about his experience running Reiver Games, his 12 years’ experience of hand-crafted very high quality games (both for sale and as prototypes) and teach the audience some of the many tips and tricks he’s learnt during that time.

Jackson will take a flat sheet of greyboard, an A3 sheet of vinyl sticker, five A3 sheets of card and an A4 rules sheet and craft a finished game.

We’ll also try and catch The Dice Tower, Shut Up and Sit Down, Jolly Boat, Live RPG Plus, Pandemic Live, plus loads more games and try not to bankrupt Coaching for Geeks by BUYING ALL THE GAMES.
