Roots – Reaching Our Own Tomorrows
Games are great! Learning is great! What about learning through games? Perfect.
Robin Bates, founder of Coaching for Geeks, is huge fan of role playing games. He first picked up a D20 about 5 years ago and hasn’t looked back. Now he’s giving back by teaching a whole bunch of skills through gaming, playing, and pretending.
Roots Pod Academy
Roots Pod Academy is a community project started by Althea Blake. They support African Caribbean teenagers in Harlow, Essex, UK through interactive workshops and guest speakers. They build confidence, business skills, social media marketing and much more over the course of the week.
Empowering teenagers with the knowledge, skills, and experience to become successful business people is the aim. Coaching is available for parents so they can best support their kids too.
“It takes a community to raise a child!” So, ROOTS POD Academy welcomes the support of business owners, professionals, qualified coaches and parents to assist young entrepreneurs, aged 14-24 to reach other opportunities through engaging workshops and ongoing support. We are currently offering a FREE 4 day workshop in Harlow, Essex for African Caribbean teens aged 14-18 this half-term. To register for a place call 01279 887170
Learning with Games
So where does Robin come into this? When does the learning with games begin? With his bag of dice, clutch of pencils, and some sheaves of paper – that’s where! Geek Robin will be running a role playing game. A game set entirely in the imagination. A game of planning, a game of communication, and a game of throwing dice.
A heist! Groups will be planning, resourcing, and implementing a heist. Plan it, get in, get the gods, get out. They’ll need to work as team, making use of each of their abilities, communicate effectively under stressful circumstances, and deal with the unknown as their careful laid plan may begin to unravel.
Also they’ll each be a different kind of bear.
They’ll learn through gaming their communication, planning, confidence, team work, taking opportunities, dealing with failure, and much more. Opening the week like this gives them an opportunity to have fun, get to know each other, and leave their inhibitions behind.
