Twitch removes ‘PogChamp’ emote

Jan 07, 2021

Twitch has removed the popular PogChamp emote from the service, it announced last night in a series of tweets.  The face of the emote Ryan ‘Gootecks’ Gutierrez had tweeted in a most unpog manner, inciting civil unrest and violence following the death of one of the invaders of the Capitol, using the hashtag #magamartyr.

“We want the sentiment and use of Pog to live on – its meaning is much bigger than the person depicted or image itself- and it has a big place in Twitch culture. However, we can’t in good conscience continue to enable use of the image.” continued Twitch on Twitter.

PogChamp is one of the oldest Twitch emotes, and has become a deeply ingrained part of twitch culture. Originating from an outtake when a camera man tripped and fell over his tripod, Gootecks’ face became the emote of excitement, big wins, thrills, and surprise.

“We will work with the community to design a new emote for the most hype moments on Twitch.” continued Twitch.

Poggers, replacement emotes, and the spirit of pog shall live on, even with the original face banished for being incredibly unpoggerz. Twitter had their own favourites in mind.
