Big Book and Giant Book of Battle Mats – Critical Hit or Epic Fail?

d&d Mar 01, 2019

Two books of Battle Mats. One Big, one Giant. But which is best?

Robin tried both out in an effort to decide who shall win the battle of the battle mats!

The Giant Book of Battle Mats

The Giant Book of Battle Mats is a collection of 62 battle mat pages in a large lay flat spiral bound volume, A3 in size per page.

Designed to provide easy access to a variety of environments to be used for encounters.

All designs have a 1″ grid either as an overlay or as part of the design.

Pages are laminated so can be drawn upon and wiped clean using wet or dry wipe markers or chalk pens.

The Good Stuff:

  • A whole variety of maps, from castles and ruins to beaches and dungeons.
  • Perfect for those random encounters in spooky ruins, wastelands, graveyards, and throne rooms.
  • Spiral bound so it lies flat and you can use half a map, a whole map, or even join books together to make epic maps.

  • Versatile enough to pull off the shelf for random encounters or pre planned mischief.

Ignore the washing in the background…

The Bad Stuff:

  • It’s huge, it’s floppy, it’s a pain to carry around – this one is meant for home use. A little more variety wouldn’t go amiss, but this is a Coaching for Geeks ‘Shut Up and Take My Money’ award.

The Big Book of Battle Mats

Winner of the 2018 UK Games Expo People’s Choice Award for Best Accessory.

The Big Book of Battle Mats is the Giant book’s older but smaller brother; a collection of 58 battle mat pages in a lay flat spiral bound volume, A4 in size per page.

Designed to be carried with your RPG books and to provide easy access to a variety of environments to be used for encounters.

Pages are laminated so can be drawn upon and wiped clean using wet or dry wipe markers or chalk pens.

Designs are arranged so that they can be used as single pages or as part of a double page spread.

The Good Stuff:

  • Absolutely perfect for travel and convention play.
  • A stunning set of maps including blank pages for your own freehand maps.
  • An amazing resource for any Dungeon Master or Game Master to have. Takes the stress out of those random encounters.

The Bad Stuff:

  • Not as many pages as its bigger brother.
  • The shrunk size means everything in the world is much larger, creates a slightly more imposing sense of scale but less room to maneuver.

And the winner is…

The Giant Book of Battle Mats is just too perfect for me to not win. The versatility and size means it’s easy to make an epic encounter or a more intimate roleplaying section of the quest.

The Big Book is great, the Giant Book is a must have.
